I had been trying to figure out how I was going to paint the redwoods- their size is so immense that any attempt I made at encompassing their grandeur was paltry and and a total failure. I had pretty much given up, when I came across this scene while hiking through the Sierra foothills. Mortar holes were formed from the pounding of acorns over generations by the Miwok Indians, who lived throughout the Bay area and Sierra foothills. (There are several very cool examples, with petroglyphys, at Indian Grinding Rock State Park near Jackson, CA). It was magical for me to come across these historic and ancient mortar holes in a meadow in the middle of the forest. This gave me the opportunity to include a life-like feature and just show the minimum of the redwood's bark to give its feeling. The viewer must imagine the rest....

I know all those folks in Martha's Vineyard think the windmills will be an eyesore to their beautiful coastline, but I am always enthralled at the beauty, power, and sheer coolness of these environmentally friendly engines while driving through the Altamount Pass. I did my first series of 4 landscapes, here are 2 of those.

Yes, I know paintings of the Golden Gate are stereotypical and perhaps overdone, but what kind of a Civil Engineer and Artist would I be if I wasn't inspired by this scene !!?!!! The colors change by the minute, the sunsets, the fog.....it is an Engineer - Artist's dream.
